Private Lessons

Private lessons can be started at any time of the year for students of any age, as early as 3 years old. Many young beginners start with our 10-week Pre-Twinkle intro course, offered three times a year.

We offer private music lessons on…

  • A group of teenagers play the violin as a class.

    Violin

One of our most popular instruments, our students have the opportunity to learn violin in several styles. Our faculty teach violin using the Suzuki Method, traditional programs, folk music, as well as Kanack’s very own Creative Ability Development Method.

  • A smiling student with a viola on his shoulder.

    Viola

The viola is an instrument like a violin, but a little larger. Our viola students learn to take full advantage of its beautiful, mellow tones. Our faculty teach viola lessons in Suzuki Method, traditional programs, and Kanack’s very own Creative Ability Development Method.

  • Two students play the cello together.

    Cello

Cellists participate in a lively musical culture where they are encouraged to discover all the possibilities their instrument has to offer. Students learn the cello using the Suzuki Method, traditional programs, and Kanack’s own Creative Ability Development Method.

  • A piano student with a violin student in the background.

    Piano

Piano students learn useful, all-encompassing skills in music theory as well as pushing the limits of their keyboard skills in classical or jazz on a daily basis with our piano faculty. Students learn piano using the Suzuki Method, traditional programs, and keyboard harmony.

  • A microphone with a brass top.

    Voice

Voice students learn to harness the natural beauty of the human voice by practicing with vocal exercises how to breathe for singing, how to sing accurately in tune, how to project far into an audience, as well as creating a commanding presence onstage.

  • An orchestral harp next to a music stand a chair.

    Harp

The harp is a magnificent instrument and we are proud to have a harp program at the Kanack School, complete with harps of all sizes for players of all ages!

  • A man strumming a guitar.

    Guitar

The guitar is a versatile instrument with applications in a wide variety of styles. Our students can learn acoustic or electric guitar for playing the multi-layered style of classical music, the soulful power of pop, the dancing rhythm of folk, or the timeless grooves of rock ‘n’ roll.

  • A mandolin in an instrument stand.

    Mandolin

The mandolin shares some similarities with its cousin, the violin, but it is a completely different instrument with its own unique sound. Students learn mandolin to take it’s melodic and harmonic possibilities to the wild and extreme ends of this crowd-pleasing instrument.

  • A woman in a white dress strums a ukulele.

    Ukulele

The ukulele is a very popular instrument owing to its size and useful arrangement of chord shapes, perfect for beginners who want to pick up a low-maintenance harmony instrument or develop skills which will be handy later for the guitar.

  • A smiling person holds a 5-string banjo under their arm.

    Banjo

The banjo is a mainstay of American music, especially bluegrass and country music, and now a strong presence in many other folk styles. Students can learn 4-string or 5-string banjo.

  • A view over the shoulder of a girl playing the flute.

    Flute

Students who learn flute study breath control, embouchure, proper maintenance, finger dexterity, and articulation as well as iconic flute repertoire.

  • A drum kit with used drum sticks laid across the snare.

    Drums

Students who pick up the drum kit take lessons in rudimentary techniques in stick control and style, reading drum music, keeping time, accurate rhythms, dynamics, and creating excitement across a range of various styles.

Private Lesson Benefits

  • Creative Ability Development

Many students opt to learn CAD in our weekly improv classes and many others also learn through one-on-one private lessons. Our Pre-Twinkle Program is also based on CAD using Alice Kanack’s Playing From the Heart.

  • Suzuki Method and Repertoire

The Suzuki Philosophy is deeply embedded in our work here at KSMA. Creative Ability Development and the Suzuki Method are so closely related here that the two methods go hand in hand.

  • Music Hour

Students who wish to practice performing can take advantage of our bi-weekly Music Hour program, with accompaniment services available at no cost. Talk to your teacher to sign up.

  • Studio Recitals

All students perform twice every year in studio recitals. Performance is an integral part of learning an instrument and we train our students to stand up with confidence in front of an audience.

  • Weekly Classes

All our regularly scheduled weekly classes are included with private lesson tuition. This is to encourage our students to learn, play, and develop musical friendships as much as possible! We are very proud of the community atmosphere fostered by our weekly class program.

  • Folk Music

Students who prefer an alternative approach to their instrument will feel right at home with our folk music teachers. Or they can get the best of both worlds at fiddle class every week!
